Cooking rice in an Open Pan or Vessel

The conventional method of preparing rice is to boil it in an open pan. Therefore, Let us see how to do this technique first.

Pre-cooking preparation

  1. Wash the rice with water at least two times to remove the white polish and other impurities from the rice

  2. Soak and leave the rice in water for about 30 minutes (depending on the age of the rice- more age means more time)

  3. Drain the water and keep the rice

​

Cooking Method

  1. Use a pan or dish with adequate depth.

  2. After adding 75 percent water, place it on the stove to bring the water to a boil.

  3. A small amount of salt, if necessary (depending on your custom and habit)

  4. Add the rice to the heating water once the water in the pan has started to boil.

  5. Cook on the stove for a further 10 to 15 minutes.

  6. Using a spoon, remove a few grains from the boiling pan, pinch them between your palms, and check to see if they have softened and are easy to mash.

  7. If the rice in the pan has boiled, lower the stove's flame to a low setting.

  8. If you find that there is still some water in the pan, tilt it with a sieve or pan to drain the remaining water.

  9. After around five minutes, remove the pan from the burner and leave it on a dim or very low flame.

  10. The rice has now been well stirred and mixed and is prepared for serving.

Cooking Rice in a closed Pan/ Pressure Cooker

Cooking rice in a closed Pan or a pressure cooker is the most widely used method to cook rice. Let us see how to cook rice in a pressure cooker

Pre-cooking preparation

Note: Pre-cooking preparation is the same in all types of cooking rice.

Cooking procedure

  1. Take the pan or the pressure cookerand fill it with waterup to 2 to 3 times the quantity of rice you want to cook. (Depends on the age and grain size of the rice you are cooking)

  2. Now add the soaked rice into the pressure cooker

  3. Now turn on the stove and allow the water and rice to reach boiling 

  4. When there is a steady flow of steam out of the pressure cooker place the pressure valve

  5. Turn down the stove to medium heat and allow the cooker to give three to 4 whistles 

  6. Turn off the stove and allow the stove to cool

  7. Remove the pressure valve and open the cooker 

  8. Stir and mix the rice in the pressure cooker and it is now ready to serve.

Boiling Rice in an Electric Rice cooker

Cooking rice in an Electric rice cooker is the easiest method to cook rice. Let us see how to cook rice in an electric rice cooker

​

Pre-cooking preparation

Note: Pre-cooking preparation is the same in all types of cooking rice.

Cooking procedure

  1. Add the soaked rice to your rice cooker, give it a toss, and then spread it out in an even layer.

  2. Shut the cooker lid and allow it to cook.

  3. When the rice cooker signals, then it means rice is cooked completely.

  4. Allow the rice to rest for 10 minutes

  5. Then lift the lid and fluff the rice with the rice paddle
